>> MEET THE MIDDLE AGES - At Chesterfield Medieval Market

24 July 2007

Step back to the Middle Ages on Tuesday 24 July at the biggest free show in the area – Chesterfield’s Medieval Market.

Find out what life was like in the Middle Ages at a Medieval encampment in the grounds of the town’s famous ‘Crooked Spire’ Church where you can watch the arming of the knight, see him fighting and talk to his Lady. Don’t leave without climbing the Tower for a close-up look at the Spire and a fantastic view of Chesterfield, the Market and even the fun fair in New Square.

Heironymous Slop, the court jester, will be at work in Rykneld Square outside the Tourist Information Centre next door to the Church. Call inside to pick up a free programme for the day.

Then make your way to Market Place where Medieval stallholders will be selling all manner of goods – from home made cakes and preserves to books, plants and bric-a-brac. Try your luck at games of chance, have a go at guessing games or test your mental agility.

Look out for the Rat Catcher who was only too busy in Medieval times, and keep an eye out for wandering minstrels and Sir Lupin of Pipwithers who is being carried around the market by his peasants in search of his horse!

With all this – and more! – the only thing the Medieval Market hasn’t got is a dull moment. So come to Chesterfield on Tuesday 24 July and meet the Middle Ages.
