Temple at Renishaw Hall  Inside Renishaw hall

Renishaw Hall Gardens are Italian in design and were laid out over 100 years ago by Sir George Sitwell. The garden is divided into 'rooms' with yew hedges, flanked with classical statues. These 'rooms' have been filled with an impressive collection of plants. The garden is set in acres of parkland with lakeside and nature walks.

The kids will love the Children's Fairytale Garden. Silhouettes of children's characters are hidden in the trees - the Cheshire Cat, Mary Poppins and others. They can explore the living willow tunnel that's still growing or get lost in the maze. Even the trees wear faces in this fairytale land. Often you can meet Granny Diane telling stories in a quiet corner of the Garden (check website or ring for details).

Older children can follow the Tree Trail or the Art and Literature Trail around the Garden to learn more about trees and about people who are connected to the Hall, such as the poet, Dame Edith Sitwell.

The Vineyard at Renishaw was established in 1972 and is one of the most northerly vineyards in England. The vineyeard is nurtured throughout the year and the grapes are used as the base for still and sparkling wine.

In the Stable Block is the Sitwell Museum and the Performing Arts Gallery, as well as the John Piper Gallery. You can also have a meal or just coffee and a cake in the Gallery Café.

The Hall is opening to the public for the first time in 2010. Guided tours of the Hall will take place every Friday throughout the season at 2 pm. Booking is recommended.

Renishaw Hall is still very much a family home which adds to its unique atmosphere. A tour of the Hall will allow you to see some of the spectacular collections of art and furniture that have been acquired by generations of Sitwells. It is quite literally a treasure trove, of inestimable value to students and art lovers alike.
